FPL Classic GW 1: Duzor Dazzles, Bench Boost Bedazzled

Duy’s Duzor (86)

A statement gameweek 1 from Duy. He bested all of us while staying true to his Man United loyalty, fielding Yoro (4) and benching Dorgu (1).

Captain Haaland (26) lead the charge and Wood (13) was the best differential pick in our league for gameweek 1. Gakpo (7) and Anderson (6) were some other apt selections that delivered.

Duy’s luck stat is already in chaos mode.

He’s unlucky to have Konsa (3), who will now miss a game after getting red carded. Fortunately for Duy, Konsa kept his 4 clean sheet points because Villa didn’t concede after he got sent off.

He was unlucky for Gvardiol (DNP) to not start from injury, but Yoro (4) rewarded him for being faithful to his clubsmen.

Derek’s Cole Fired Power (77) (Bench Boosted)

We have our first chip used, and although a 9 point bench boost left a lot to be desired, it was still a respectable total score. Funny to see our league’s most popular bench keeper, Dubravka (2), outscore Areola (DNP).

Backing in Ndiaye (2) was a letdown. Here’s a fun fact: Everton haven’t won a Premier League game in August since 2021 (for those that have an Everton defender, none of their draws were a clean sheet).

Sandra’s SZ (52)

Our 2024/25 winner is kicking off the 2025/26 season with a below par score. Sources say the team was created on Friday night, just hours before the deadline. Being an FPL manager was apparently not the biggest priority in the preseason.

What Sandra lacked on field, she made up for on the bench. SZ scored a league high 12 points on the bench. This wouldn’t ordinarily be an achievement, but it is when another competitor uses the bench boost 😉.

Keven’s The Assets (54)

It’s only week one, and I’ve had an early crow. I said I needed to pick assets and give up on players like Richarlison (13)… then two goals later, he certainly showed me.

I’ve simply blended in with the crowd in the first week, with a score smack bang on the world average. But you know what the most important thing is? I managed to keep our assets above our liabilities. That’s just good business if I do say so myself.

Brian’s The Liabilities (43)

Honestly, a rough week for The Liabilities. I think they mistakenly listened to his team name? Zero goals, zero assists and zero defensive contribution points from Brian’s seven attackers. Oof.

As a fellow Bruno (2) owner, he was just one defensive contribution away from a bonus 2 points 🙃. Should we be worried that Duy decided to avoid him?

Vu’s Laser (41)

A grand entrance that unfortunately wasn’t so grand.

Vu might be the first in history to select two Liverpool defenders and have both subbed off in the 59th minute.

Here’s a quick deep dive into the FPL rules: if a defender plays 60+ minutes, they become eligible for clean sheet points. Missing that threshold cost Vu 8 points (4 for Kerkez and 4 for Frimpong). Even if Liverpool concede after they’re subbed off (which they did), the points would have stayed.

The only exception is a red card, where the clean sheet points are wiped if the team concedes. That’s why Konsa (3) was so lucky Villa kept a clean sheet with 10 men.

Gameweek 1 followed the Haaland Salah matrix.

Owns both Haaland and Salah – 1st

Owns Haaland, no Salah – 2nd

Owns Salah, no Haaland – 3rd and 4th

Owns neither – 5th and 6th

Haaland owners were winners, Salah owners ended up in the middle of the pack, and non-owners got off to a slow start.

Now you may be wondering why my team name is not displaying as The Assets, and my only guess is that “ass” put it under team name review 😭.

Keep well and stay swell~
